About the Mexican Gold Peso
Mexico's gold Peso series runs from the 2 Peso, holding just 1.5 grams of fine gold, up to the 50 Peso Centenario at 37.5 grams — the largest regularly-struck gold coin of its era outside the Austrian 100 Corona. All six denominations share the same .900 fine standard, so they price as one family with premiums that fall as the coin gets larger.
The 50 Peso was first struck in 1921 to mark the centenary of Mexican independence, which is where the Centenario name comes from. The smaller denominations reach further back — the 2, 2.5 and 5 Peso pieces circulated as everyday coinage. Mexico restruck all of them in quantity through the second half of the twentieth century, which is why they trade as bullion today rather than as scarce dates.
The fractional Pesos are among the cheapest ways into small gold. A 2 Peso carries roughly 1/20 oz of gold at a premium typically well under a comparable modern 1/20 oz bullion coin, because it is valued as metal rather than as a current-issue mint product. The trade-off is that .900 gold marks and wears more readily than .9999, and most examples have circulated.
