About the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf
The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf is the Royal Canadian Mint's flagship gold bullion coin. It launched in 1979 as the world's first .9999-fine gold bullion coin, and from 1982 onward the entire series has been struck to that four-nines standard. The 2007 anniversary issue produced a famous .99999 (five-nines) variant, ranking among the purest gold coins ever struck for general bullion sale.
The obverse carries the effigy of the reigning Canadian monarch. Coins struck through 2023 carry Queen Elizabeth II, and later strikes carry the King Charles III effigy. The reverse displays a single sugar maple leaf, a design that has remained essentially unchanged since the series launched. That visual continuity is part of why dealers worldwide recognize the Maple Leaf on sight.
In 2013 the Royal Canadian Mint added radial-line micro-engraving to the field around the maple leaf, plus a small laser-engraved security mark with a micro-etched maple leaf design containing the last two digits of the year. Together these features harden the coin against counterfeiting without changing its stack-friendly look.
The series is issued in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, and 1/20 oz sizes. The 1 oz is by far the most-stocked size at US dealers, with fractionals seeing thinner but consistent inventory. Maple Leafs typically carry some of the lowest premiums among major sovereign gold coins, frequently undercutting the American Gold Eagle on a percent-over-spot basis.
The Maple Leaf is .9999 fine, which means it is soft. The coin has no copper or silver alloy hardener, so the surface marks more easily than a 22-karat Eagle or Krugerrand. If you handle the coin, handle it by the rim, and if you want it pristine, leave it in the assay sleeve or original mint tube the dealer ships.
For US buyers, Maple Leafs trade at a peer level with Britannias, Philharmonics, and Eagles. They are not tax-advantaged in the United States, and they trade on global premium terms. The case for them is purity, dealer recognition, and consistently competitive pricing.
